STAYING HOME GUIDELINES

GUIDELINES FOR WHEN STUDENTS NEED TO STAY HOME

Children should stay home from school if, during the last 24 hours, they have had any of the following symptoms:

  • Temperature of 100 degrees or greater (child should be free of fever for 24 hours without medication to reduce fever before returning to school)
  • Vomiting or diarrhea (it is recommended that a physician be contacted if the vomiting and diarrhea last longer than 24 hours or becomes severe. Please do not send your child to school if they have had more than 2 runny stools in the past 24 hours)
  • Unusual or unexplained rash, especially when accompanied by fever.
  • Severe cough or cold with temperature of 100 degrees or greater.
  • Red, inflamed eyes (should not attend if itching, pain, or drainage is present, consult doctor).
  • Ringworm (area must be covered during treatment).
  • Head lice: Students with live head lice should not be returned to school for 24 hours after the discovery to allow for treatment. Proper treatment MUST be initiated. When a student returns, he/she will be examined by the school nurse.
  • Scabies (must provide doctor’s statement of diagnosis and treatment).
  • Chickenpox (excluded for 7 days from onset of rash, at that time all blisters must be dry crusts).
  • Strep throat (following a positive throat culture the child may return to school 24 hours after antibiotic treatment is begun and the child is fever free).
  • Mononucleosis (infected children may attend school upon the approval of a physician, as long as without fever and precautions are taken with water fountain use, and as long as student feels well enough to return to daily activity)

Children should be kept home if any of the above symptoms are present. If such symptoms occur during the day, they will need to be picked up promptly. It is highly imperative that Health Services has a correct, working phone number and another emergency contact person who will assume responsibility for picking your child up from school when you are NOT available.

Please contact the school if there is a change of phone numbers, address, or emergency contact person. Also, please contact the school when your child is not attending for the day.
